Acupuncture
The first record
of Acupuncture is found in the Huang Di Nei Jing (Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine), a
2,700 year old textbook believed to be the oldest medical textbook in the
world. This classic documented theories about circulation, pulse and the
heart 2,000 years before western medicine began studying them. Acupuncture
has been used widely in China
ever since, and it spread to Japan
through Korea
1,300 years ago. In Japan,
acupuncture was further refined to become an independent system of
medicine.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the
insertion of very fine needles on the body’s surface in order to influence
the energetic functioning of the body.
Acupuncture is sometimes used in conjunction with electrical stimulation
and moxibustion, a process in which heat is
produced by burning certain herbs.
How does Acupuncture Work?
The body has an
energy force running through it called “Qi”
(pronounced Chee), or vital energy. Acupuncture
is the art of balancing the “Qi” which flows
through the body along “meridians” or pathways. A person’s health is
influenced by the flow of Qi in combination with
the forces of Yin and Yang. If the
flow of Qi is insufficient, imbalanced,
deficient, excess or blocked, illness may occur. The acupuncture points are specific
locations along the meridians and are easily accessible by abdominal
diagnosis, needling and moxibustion. Based on the pulse diagnosis, the
acupuncturist selects a combination of acupuncture points to balance the Qi circulation in the internal organs, muscles, and the
skin. The goal of acupuncture is to ensure that there is an even flow of Qi and a balance between Yin and Yang.
Needling Techniques
Japanese acupuncturists use very fine needles
with gentle, painless insertion techniques. They select acupuncture points
by using energetic principles of Yin, Yang and the Five Elements.

Oriental Medicine
Oriental Medicine
is the broad term used to describe the different medical systems that have
been developed over several centuries and are still practiced in East Asia.
They include Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology
as well as Japanese Acupuncture and Kampo
(Japanese Herbal Medicine), moxibustion, cupping,
dietary modifications, Tuina (massage), and the
various “Qi” manipulation techniques.
The oldest system
is the 4,700 year old Chinese medical system of acupuncture and herbal
medicine. The system is based on
detecting imbalances in the energy system of the body “Qi”
and correcting them to maintain and restore wellness.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Traditional
Chinese herbalism has evolved over thousands of
years. The old Chinese masters
recorded their observations and discoveries and passed this knowledge on
from master to student. It is an art
to know which of the hundreds of herbs and herbal formulas to use for each
condition and how to combine them for the most effective treatment. Recently, research institutes throughout
Asia and the U.S.
have performed extensive studies to document the health benefits of Chinese
herbs and formulas.
Japanese Herbal Medicine (Kampo)
With its roots in
China, Kampo is a unique system of herbal medicine which has
been developed and refined in Japan since the 15th
century. Kampo
herbal formulas reflect centuries of clinical experience and are designed
to enhance the body’s own healing energy and restore its natural
balance. Kampo
medicines are precise, effective, and relatively free of side effects. Today in Japan, approximately 75% of
Japanese physicians prescribe Kampo formulas for
their patients.
